    SEO plugin for wordpress

I recently installed the SEO (search engine optimization) plugin for PolyCareers, which is just a customized template on wordpress.  Despite the idea of “plug n’ play” and becoming easily searched by search engines, it is not so easy for us.  We have a wordpress template that is so different and customized that google is picking up phrases and keywords from totally different and undesired parts of the site.  Although the plugin sounds good, I think this will take a bit more tweaking on my part.

    About to Launch

Polycareers is almost ready to launch.  I’m just finishing up adding some of the primary companies that Cal Poly business students intern and work for.  I am experiencing one problem however.  Upon first visit to the homepage, it takes quite a while to load.  I’ve done some research, and the only thing I can think of is it’s either A) some wordpress plugin is bogging it down or B) our server takes time to load initially.  A user only experiences a slow load time upon first visit to the website.  After that it seems to cache and everything loads pretty snappy.  Next step will be to start marketing it, and getting our peers to put up their reviews and experiences.

    Danger of PolyCareers?

After talking about PolyCareers.com with a few students on campus, the worry of the site becoming a potential danger to relationships between companies and Cal Poly has been a topic of conversation.  What will happen if students leave a review bashing on their internship experience with a certain company?  We could be treading some dangerous waters.

When I think about these comments my mind immediately goes to all of the startup and business readings I have done in the past which repeatedly say to ignore all naysayers.  Not that these comments are nay-sayings of any kind.  They are actual concerns that my partner and I have though about from the beginning we decided to go along with the project.

Companies already know their relationship with the students.  Most of the programs evaluate the interns asking for honest opinions about their experience.  They are not asking anyone to keep the experiences to themselves and confidential.  That would just be insane.  Students talk.  Students go to their peers for information.  PolyCareers is simply a tool that allows for an easier collaboration and communication for these students.

    DreamHost for polycareers

My senior project partner and I set up our hosting and domain for polycareers.com today with DreamHost, a great alternative to GoDaddy.  I was really impressed with the easy configuration, and one-click setup options that they offer.  Not to mention the amount of space they give at such a low price.  It was about three years ago that I decided to use GoDaddy as my main provider for domains and storage.  I think I will use DreamHost next time around.  So far I am very pleased with the service that they have to offer.
