    Last Week of College

I’m in my last week of college, which I’m extremely excited about but at the same time I’m nostalgically sad to realize that the things I loved most about going to Cal Poly will soon be only a memory.  In an earlier post I wrote about how my college experience has been a bit disappointing, and further discussing this with my fiance, I have to say that Cal Poly has given me more than I ever imagined.  Most importantly, I owe the opportunity to go work for Cisco to Cal Poly, after-all it is what most people go to college for right?

    Here is a list:

A full-time job at Cisco starting August 18th

Fellowship and relationships with some incredible people, most of which were also formed through campus crusade.

Bike rides through through the oak trees on campus to get to class or the gym.

This is one of my favorite things.  Riding through the shade and on the sun-spotted grass, I can see the beautiful business building on my left with the rose garden and football stadium on my right..simply gorgeous and invigorating.  If you want to check out what this is like go to the web cam here!

Beach volleyball.  We had a solid group of guys who play throughout the week on campus.  It was excellent to take a dip in the pool after playing in the hot sun.

Basketball.  Also some great competition in an awesome rec center. Dunks for days ja’ll.

The library.  I know, i know..how nerdy right?  The library was an excellent place to study.  State of the art equipment and cafe for extreme studying.

Baguette sandwiches.  I loved these even though they could only be bought at random times.  I don’t know why they had such a shortage of supply.

Cal Poly, you will be missed.

    Valuable Classes

This quarter I am taking a required Organizational Behavior course.  Right away I knew I would love the class.  It is easily one of the most valuable classes offered at Cal Poly.  The gist of the course is how to work in a group or team of people and be effective in working toward a common goal.  Key topics like how to diffuse conflict and positively influence others are just a couple of the lessons learned.

    DreamHost for polycareers

My senior project partner and I set up our hosting and domain for polycareers.com today with DreamHost, a great alternative to GoDaddy.  I was really impressed with the easy configuration, and one-click setup options that they offer.  Not to mention the amount of space they give at such a low price.  It was about three years ago that I decided to use GoDaddy as my main provider for domains and storage.  I think I will use DreamHost next time around.  So far I am very pleased with the service that they have to offer.

    Drupal Senior Project

This year, A good friend of mine Ronald Wong and I, will be using Drupal as a platform to create a community around the idea of developing a website that allows Cal Poly students to get an inside look at internships and job opportunities.  “The good, the bad, the ugly” if you will.  (A quote from Cisco on Cisco, the group I interned with just this last summer.)  Our vision is to create a place where students who have already had worked with certain companies can share their experiences with those who are seeking.  The challenge will be tinkering with Drupal, a content management platform, to best fit our vision.  Drupal has a lot of potential in that it provides limitless customization and modules for different needs.  I have purchased polycareers.com and hope to get a rough beta version up and going soon.
