The four hour work week, literally

Like rails?  Like web apps? Love life?  Well, then you’ll love David Heinemeier Hansson, 37signals: “Friday Keynote”. Thirty minutes into it David talks about living more and programming less.  In summary, y programming less and doing other things, it gives a smaller window forcing you to bust out meaningful code and forgetting all the other stuff.  He encourages getting your sleep, reading some good books, exploring other avenues of business,  bettering yourself in other areas besides your profession.  He says “I don’t know how people do it, surviving only on five hours of sleep.  I cannot operate at peak performance living like that.”  When David first started coding bascamp, he was only allowed 10 billable hours/week.  This gave him no other choice but code with less lines, but gave him the drive to build something that works in all it’s simplicity.  Stop reading rss feeds.  I’m guilty as charged here.  I spend a lot of time reading thousands of feeds in my reader.  David made an interesting point saying “How much have you actually retained and found valuable in the long run from current events and your rss feeds?”.  I’m going to give this a try.  All in all, an excellent keynote on more than just programming well.  Do yourself a favor and watch it.
