    Footprints of Trial

You know when you’ve been through trials when you flip through your bible and find wrinkles in the pages from old tears.  I love this because the tears bring me back to that exact moment.  Now you’re probably thinking why would anyone want to remember hard times?  Yes these were tears during a difficult time, but they were tears as a result of joy, peace, grace, and comfort from Jesus my savior.  It happens when despair and anxiety are so overwhelming that there is nothing to do but go to God’s word.  It’s in this moment that while reading the scripture I come across a passage that is so unmistakably my Father speaking to me the tears are impossible to hold back.  It’s so awesome to come across those pages and see how God not only comforted me, but delivered and made me stronger in Him.

Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love, that he may deliver their soul from death and keep them alive in famine.  -psalm 33:18

    Relocation: Bay Area

It’s now been a month since I’ve moved up to the bay area, and let me say it’s been nothing of what I originally expected.  It’s been a major transition moving away from home, family, and comfort especially since I envisioned it so differently and secondly because I am a person who does not like unfamiliarity (which I am working on).  I am incredibly blessed to be up here with an incredible job and an incredible church right down the road from me.  The theme of this time in my life?  Change.  But not just any change, a change that has been one of the hardest and most important times of my life.  One that has given me no other option but to rely on God throughout the day and night and come to really find who he is.  2 Corinthians  1:8-10 talks about trials and tribulations with the emphasis on “But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises from the dead”.  God allows hard times to bring us closer to him and then for us to encourage others.  This verse has become incredibly comforting and my daily theme.  There are times when I find that I want a quick fix, but pastor John Mcarthur’s advice really hits home; “Being obedient to the word of God and letting God do his perfecting work in your life, that is the answer- not running all over the place to have your troubles fixed.”

    A Miracle Perhaps?

With only a handful of stitches on my knee, there is no doubt about it that God saved me that day.  I took these pictures only a couple of hours after the accident and being released from the hospital.  Seventy mph on cruise control and one concrete pillar later I somehow crawled out the back window in one piece.  Enjoy.

    Last Week of College

I’m in my last week of college, which I’m extremely excited about but at the same time I’m nostalgically sad to realize that the things I loved most about going to Cal Poly will soon be only a memory.  In an earlier post I wrote about how my college experience has been a bit disappointing, and further discussing this with my fiance, I have to say that Cal Poly has given me more than I ever imagined.  Most importantly, I owe the opportunity to go work for Cisco to Cal Poly, after-all it is what most people go to college for right?

    Here is a list:

A full-time job at Cisco starting August 18th

Fellowship and relationships with some incredible people, most of which were also formed through campus crusade.

Bike rides through through the oak trees on campus to get to class or the gym.

This is one of my favorite things.  Riding through the shade and on the sun-spotted grass, I can see the beautiful business building on my left with the rose garden and football stadium on my right..simply gorgeous and invigorating.  If you want to check out what this is like go to the web cam here!

Beach volleyball.  We had a solid group of guys who play throughout the week on campus.  It was excellent to take a dip in the pool after playing in the hot sun.

Basketball.  Also some great competition in an awesome rec center. Dunks for days ja’ll.

The library.  I know, i know..how nerdy right?  The library was an excellent place to study.  State of the art equipment and cafe for extreme studying.

Baguette sandwiches.  I loved these even though they could only be bought at random times.  I don’t know why they had such a shortage of supply.

Cal Poly, you will be missed.

    Going back to my roots

    Photobucket

I recently bought a pair of Nike Air Jordan Retro 11, which I loved as soon as I put them on.  They not only were comfortable and light, but looked unique as well.  I was dissapointed though after only playing in them for a few months to find that they broke down fairly quickly. I have had a hurt heel as well which started after coming down from a dunk. I don’t know if it was because of the shoe, or just because of my own recklessness.

So? I’ve gone back to my roots of my highschool days and bought a pair of Adidas pro model fusion. They are slightly different with a few improvements from my original pair. They’re comfortable, light, and sturdy.

    Wefollow.com makes twitter

Kevin Rose created an excellent site called wefollow.com.  The site allows you to tag yourself under different categories in simple yet elegant interface.  In my opinion this app makes twitter.  With thousands joining twitter daily, it’s hard to find the right person to follow.  Wefollow.com solves this problem.

    Learning Ruby on Rails

For the last few months I’ve been putting in some good quality time to dedicate to learning Ruby on Rails.  Although only able to do the basics, I feel I’ve come extremely far.  The ability to quickly get a working web app up and going is such a great feeling.  With only a little bit of programming experience, I have listened to the advice the great rails creators like David Hansson and jumped in without even having a concrete understanding of the ruby language.  It can be done.  Do it.

Three great resources I’ve been using to get up and going.

    1) Agile Web Development with Rails 3rd Edition

    2) www.railscasts.com

    3) #rubyonrails irc chat room on the freenode (an incredible resource).

    My College Experience

Now into my last quarter at Cal Poly, I have to say that I’m having mixed feelings.  After five years I’m thrilled to be getting out, but at the same time I don’t know whether I feel that I gained great skills and great knowledge.  I can only say there were a handfull of courses that I actually benefited from in those five years and most of them being non-technical.

One of the classes that really standout as an exceptional experience was my classical music appreciation class at the community college before I transfered to Cal Poly.  The professor was a brilliant guy from Austria who had a passion for impacting lives, and was a successful pianist and composer on the side.

So all said and done, I will be leaving Cal Poly and my college experience a bit unsatisfied but ready to be done with school for now and go to work at Cisco.
