"f*** startups!"
David’s talk “The Real World” is awesome.  I posted earlier on a few points he made during the FOWA dublin event about being productive, using a 4 hour work week, and creating something simple.  Now the video of his talk is out and I highly recommend it here.  A very shocking statement he says is simply “F*** startups!  It’s about creating a...

Rails error message
To show a helpful error message in rails simply put <%= error_messages_for( :class = ‘action’) %> in the view that you want the error message to show.  Now this will work when you have some validation code in your model related to the view.  For example “validates_presence_of :title :artist”.  So when a user forgets to enter in the required fields they will be...

Money for Small Business
Going back to one of my previous posts, I wrote about how Obama had nothing in his stimulus plan for entrepreneurship and small business.  Well now he’s fixed that.  Today the president stated the U.S. Treasury will buy as much as $15 billion Small Business Administration loans.  This is all in hope that business will be able to get more capital to stimulate the economy.  Obama said...

The four hour work week, literally
Like rails?  Like web apps? Love life?  Well, then you’ll love David Heinemeier Hansson, 37signals: “Friday Keynote”. Thirty minutes into it David talks about living more and programming less.  In summary, y programming less and doing other things, it gives a smaller window forcing you to bust out meaningful code and forgetting all the other stuff.  He encourages getting your...

SEO plugin for wordpress
I recently installed the SEO (search engine optimization) plugin for PolyCareers, which is just a customized template on wordpress.  Despite the idea of “plug n’ play” and becoming easily searched by search engines, it is not so easy for us.  We have a wordpress template that is so different and customized that google is picking up phrases and keywords from totally different and...

Learn to code now!
The myth that a coder must have years and years of experience to start a successful company is just that, a myth.  David Heinemeier Hansson elaborated on this when he spoke on “Creating Software in the Real World” at FOWA Dublin.  I’ll admit I have been perving tough on David, one of the founders of 37 signals and creator of rails.  One thing that really stuck out in his talk...

Startups don't need business plans
Is it true?  Guy Kawasaki talks about writing business plans in his book Reality Check, and how entrepreneurs can get so caught up in the train of thought that they have to write these huge elaborate books of pages upon pages before they even start the business.  Should entrepreneurs ditch the business plan altogether?  I would say so.  All an entrepreneur needs is his pitch and an executive...
