The Beautiful Exchange
This evening I was listening to a song by Hillsong United called “Beautiful Exchange” and was almost brought to tears when I started reading Isaiah 53:5-7 “But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we were healed.  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have...

The Holy Spirit
“The Spirit will lead you to the way of the cross, as He led Jesus to the cross, and that is definitely not a safe or pretty or comfortable place to be. The Holy Spirit of God will mold you into the person you were made to be. This is often incredibly painful process strips you of selfishness, pride, and fear.” Francis Chan - “Forgotten God” Posted via email from...

Boysen 830
Since moving up to San Jose, I have been thinking quite a bit about my couple years at Cal Poly and my apartment there on Boysen.  Even though it was so old and extremely hot in the summertime and freezing cold during the winter, it has a special place in my heart. Dear Boysen 830, Thank you for giving me a workout every day as I carried my bike up and down those long stairs that were threaded...

Footprints of Trial
You know when you’ve been through trials when you flip through your bible and find wrinkles in the pages from old tears.  I love this because the tears bring me back to that exact moment.  Now you’re probably thinking why would anyone want to remember hard times?  Yes these were tears during a difficult time, but they were tears as a result of joy, peace, grace, and comfort from Jesus...

Relocation: Bay Area
It’s now been a month since I’ve moved up to the bay area, and let me say it’s been nothing of what I originally expected.  It’s been a major transition moving away from home, family, and comfort especially since I envisioned it so differently and secondly because I am a person who does not like unfamiliarity (which I am working on).  I am incredibly blessed to be up here...

A Miracle Perhaps?
With only a handful of stitches on my knee, there is no doubt about it that God saved me that day.  I took these pictures only a couple of hours after the accident and being released from the hospital.  Seventy mph on cruise control and one concrete pillar later I somehow crawled out the back window in one piece.  Enjoy.

Last Week of College
I’m in my last week of college, which I’m extremely excited about but at the same time I’m nostalgically sad to realize that the things I loved most about going to Cal Poly will soon be only a memory.  In an earlier post I wrote about how my college experience has been a bit disappointing, and further discussing this with my fiance, I have to say that Cal Poly has given me more...

Going back to my roots
I recently bought a pair of Nike Air Jordan Retro 11, which I loved as soon as I put them on.  They not only were comfortable and light, but looked unique as well.  I was dissapointed though after only playing in them for a few months to find that they broke down fairly quickly. I have had a hurt heel as well which started after coming down from a dunk. I don’t know if it was because of...

Wefollow.com makes twitter
Kevin Rose created an excellent site called wefollow.com.  The site allows you to tag yourself under different categories in simple yet elegant interface.  In my opinion this app makes twitter.  With thousands joining twitter daily, it’s hard to find the right person to follow.  Wefollow.com solves this problem.

Learning Ruby on Rails
For the last few months I’ve been putting in some good quality time to dedicate to learning Ruby on Rails.  Although only able to do the basics, I feel I’ve come extremely far.  The ability to quickly get a working web app up and going is such a great feeling.  With only a little bit of programming experience, I have listened to the advice the great rails creators like David Hansson...

My College Experience
Now into my last quarter at Cal Poly, I have to say that I’m having mixed feelings.  After five years I’m thrilled to be getting out, but at the same time I don’t know whether I feel that I gained great skills and great knowledge.  I can only say there were a handfull of courses that I actually benefited from in those five years and most of them being non-technical. One of the...

Being Able to Convert
PolyCareers has been live for a little while now and we have had some great contributions to the site, keeping in mind most of these internship reviews have been from our friends. Now the question is how do we convert the user sign-ups to actual reviews. I’m seeing user sign-ups daily but no reviews coming from those sign-ups. I think the problem is users are expecting a different page...

Business of Selling Books
As a student at Cal Poly, there have been a couple of different ways that students have been able to sell their books to one another besides the usual of getting ripped off by selling back to the campus book store.  One: ScrewTheBookStore.com and Two: Uloop.com. I originally used screwthebookstore.  Why? because there were enough students on it buying and selling.  There was already a community...

SQLite over MySQL
After following a tuturial on rails that used mysql for development I’m moving onto something much more easier and robust.  Being able to create a database in an app simply by using the $rake db:create, then creating the controllers, views, and models using the $rake db:migrate to generate the mysql table structure is awesome.  For more on this awesome easy setup check out the rails...

"f*** startups!"
David’s talk “The Real World” is awesome.  I posted earlier on a few points he made during the FOWA dublin event about being productive, using a 4 hour work week, and creating something simple.  Now the video of his talk is out and I highly recommend it here.  A very shocking statement he says is simply “F*** startups!  It’s about creating a...

Rails error message
To show a helpful error message in rails simply put <%= error_messages_for( :class = ‘action’) %> in the view that you want the error message to show.  Now this will work when you have some validation code in your model related to the view.  For example “validates_presence_of :title :artist”.  So when a user forgets to enter in the required fields they will be...

Money for Small Business
Going back to one of my previous posts, I wrote about how Obama had nothing in his stimulus plan for entrepreneurship and small business.  Well now he’s fixed that.  Today the president stated the U.S. Treasury will buy as much as $15 billion Small Business Administration loans.  This is all in hope that business will be able to get more capital to stimulate the economy.  Obama said...

The four hour work week, literally
Like rails?  Like web apps? Love life?  Well, then you’ll love David Heinemeier Hansson, 37signals: “Friday Keynote”. Thirty minutes into it David talks about living more and programming less.  In summary, y programming less and doing other things, it gives a smaller window forcing you to bust out meaningful code and forgetting all the other stuff.  He encourages getting your...

I recently installed the SEO (search engine optimization) plugin for PolyCareers, which is just a customized template on wordpress.  Despite the idea of “plug n’ play” and becoming easily searched by search engines, it is not so easy for us.  We have a wordpress template that is so different and customized that google is picking up phrases and keywords from totally different and...

Learn to code now!
The myth that a coder must have years and years of experience to start a successful company is just that, a myth.  David Heinemeier Hansson elaborated on this when he spoke on “Creating Software in the Real World” at FOWA Dublin.  I’ll admit I have been perving tough on David, one of the founders of 37 signals and creator of rails.  One thing that really stuck out in his talk...

Startups don't need business plans
Is it true?  Guy Kawasaki talks about writing business plans in his book Reality Check, and how entrepreneurs can get so caught up in the train of thought that they have to write these huge elaborate books of pages upon pages before they even start the business.  Should entrepreneurs ditch the business plan altogether?  I would say so.  All an entrepreneur needs is his pitch and an executive...

What is Iteration?
Iteration is a pretty widely used word that is talked about in the startup world.  But what really is it?  My mind first off goes to companies like basecamp or twitter.  Just extremely simple with with small improvements here and there along the way.  I read an excellent blog post “why iteration is a powerful way to build a startup” that’s definitely worth checking out as well. ...

Build on the Side
I recently watched an excellent presentation by rails founder David Heinemeier, his blog here, at startup school 08’.  He talked about how he and his team built basecamp on the side.  In the beginning he would bill only 10 hours/week.  There were a total of 3 people involved with other commitments.  This just goes to show great products can be created without enough time.

Email from startup ceo
I asked my mentor over at YieldBuild.com if he could send me three key points I should focus on as an aspiring entrepreneur.  His response is golden - “Brad, This easy. 1. Get a plan - Figure out what problem you’re going to solve. 2. Start building it - don’t wait to learn, or until the plan is perfect. 3. Iterate - learn from mistakes, do more of what works.”

Most important asset to a startup
As Guy Kawasaki puts it in his book Reality Check “Your executive summary is probably the most important document you will write for you company.” The content?  Only 9 parts, all not exceeding two pages because “…it’s purpose is to sell, not describe your company.” 1. Problem : What does your business solve or address? 2. Solution:  How does it do...

Obama bad for small business?
Despite all the talk for the need of tax breaks to help business thrive and hire in this down economy, Obama’s stimulus plan came with much disappointment.  The plan is to put money in the hands of consumers in hope that it will allow the trickle down effect to businesses.  Instead of creating tax deductions for entrepreneurs that many of small-business advocacy groups were hoping for,...
